Alfred's wit is as dry as ever, and Batman's first encounter with the Electrocutioner made me laugh out loud.
There are also a few lighter moments along the way. The story is more straightfoward and tense, without nearly as much of the heartache of, say, Arkham City, which was pretty emotionally exhausting by the time it was done. He also gets to visit some places we saw before in Arkham City, only this time as part of a thriving city instead of part of a prison. During the course of the game, Batman is forced to come more into the open as he battles eight assassins with a bounty on his head, and encounters a few other new (to him) villains along the way. James Gordon is still Captain Gordon, and to many criminals and police in the city, Batman is just a story - and urban myth. Set as a prequel to Arkham Asylum, Arkham Origins takes place only two years after Batman has started his war on crime in Gotham City. In particular, I really enjoyed fighting Deathstroke and timing my counters just right to get past him. The boss battles are probably the best of the series, too, combining the mastery of timing needed to win battles in the first game with the finesse of the second.
The side quests all focus on particular villains from the comics in a more organic way than the side quests in the games past, too. For one thing, there are fewer Riddler - excuse me - Enigma clues to go after. The main challenge to fighting - a better one, I think - is Arkham Origins' innovation of placing an experience premium on varying your fighting style, which made me pay attention to even more mundane brawls so I could level up faster.Ī few of the other tweaks to the game make this installment enjoyable, too. That's not the case here - fans of both of the previous games will be able to fight again in good time.

In fact, one thing that has persistently annoyed me about some series (I'm looking at you, Assassin's Creed) has been mixing up the buttons and some of the fighting styles so that your instincts from previous games actually work against you.
